Important Tips for Family Members and Caregivers
Dementia gradually impairs a person's ability to concentrate, make judgment, and remember things and events. As a family member, you must be aware of situations that require clarity of thought, including, but not limited to:
- Payments and purchases (including over the phone)
- Driving
- Using a firearm
- Working with dangerous tools or engaging in an activity that requires concentration and responsibility
- Using cooking gas or boiling water
What Can You Do?
Stay in ongoing contact with physicians and therapists and keep yourself up-to-date on the decline in their abilities and functioning.
Consult about introducing necessary restrictions in their daily life routine.
Consult about taking measures to prevent accidents and injuries and to ensure the person's safety.
